In addition to federal and state government acts, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) set forth various, legally binding regulations regarding:

- Manufacturing processes that use asbestos
- The mining of asbestos
Recent years have seen an increase in the number of mesothelioma lawsuits filed, in part because more people are now being diagnosed as a result of the widespread use of asbestos in the early- to mid-19th century.
